Dear Drip community,
In January, two of our IST members were invited to participate in a cultural exchange/residency in Rio de Janeiro.
The residency was part of a 5-week long festival entitled Ocupação Desmistifique.
Our dancers Soho and Klassic had the opportunity to exchange with Passinho dancers from the favelas of Rio, and breakin/hip-hop dancers from Curitiba, another city in Brazil. They also attended and taught workshops, panel discussions and other cultural activities. To conclude the residency, all the participants co-created an evening-length show presented twice at Teatro Cacilda Becker. (see more pictures here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1513325335432536.1073741843.1431990370232700&type=1&l=8550f5c172)
It became clear there are many similarities in the dance styles even though they all look different (FlexN, Passinho, Hip-Hop, Breakin, etc.), but more importantly in the social contexts in which those dance styles were created and keep on growing.
Our hope is to be able to bring some of the Brazilian dancers to NYC one day to further explore those links and how it positively affects & heals our respective communities.
Many thanks again to Marila Velloso, Hugo Oliveira, Funarte, and everyone involved in the realization of this exchange.
We truly believe such projects have tremendous social impact.
Above is a picture of the residents sharing moves at the Museu do Arte do Rio in front of the crowd. We hope the joy is contagious 😉
Thanks for your continuous support,
