About Me

Published on 2018-09-17

I imagine that if you're checking out this page, you already have a pretty  good idea about who I am. But the page feels naked without an 'about  me' so please indulge me just this once.

For those just tuning in:

My name is Shane W Smith, and I'm a graphic novelist based in Australia. I've been writing since I could hold a pen (got my first rejection  letter at seven), and have been working in comics since 2004 (with my  first pro publication in 2011).

I've got eight books out under my name, in genres as diverse as science fiction, zombie family drama, and post-apocalyptic musical adventure romance. Four of my books have been shortlisted for awards. I've got a creative writing degree from the University of Canberra, and I might well be the only person in the world to get a comic published in a refereed academic journal.

While I was at university, I met Katie. We've now been married for ten years, and have four amazing kids together. The amazing and talented Annie was born in 2010; the happy and energetic Liam was born in 2012; the blonde whirlwind Nella arrived on her due date in 2014; and the tiny Molly was born in 2016.

Co-writing Undad Volume Two with Katie is one of the highlights of my creative career to date.

I hold down a full-time office job to pay the bills, and do almost all of my creative work between 10pm and 1am every night. I've chosen this routine to minimise disruption to the family, and maximise the time I get to spend with them. Sleeping five hours a night is a routine that was difficult to get used to, but it's worth it if I get to make art.

I've just about reached the point in my writing career where I'm starting to feel hungry for that next step. It's taken many patient years to reach the point where convention sales, Kickstarter and royalties have reached the break-even point against expenses, and my name to get out there enough that I'm being invited as a guest to conventions, but I'm finally there. I'm thrilled to see my readership growing and would love to see that trend continue into the future.

Earlier this year, I delivered my millionth comic page into the  hands of my fans. My awesome (and growing) fanbase is incredibly  supportive of my work. I'm so appreciative: we only crushed this  milestone because of you.

In addition to parsing all my creative work to expose the dark depths of  my subconscious, backers at the $3+ tiers will get to know me quite  well through reams of behind-the-scenes content.
