Monday In The Studio: WITNESS TO THE STORM

Published on 2019-03-12

Both of us in the studio today together! Stefan narrating an amazing biography by Werner T. Angress called WITNESS TO THE STORM: A Jewish Journey from Nazi Berlin to the 82nd Airborne, 1920-1945. Published by Blackstone Publishing.

Here Stefan reads from an incident the author encountered with Marlene Dietrich. ( By serendipity, we watched the Criterion mastered DVD of Morocco a few nights back. Amazing work by von Stroheim and Marlene.Have you seen that lately? Wow. Also, amazing after commentary.)

Today, Gabrielle directs. And giggles at Marlene's indiscretions.

And here Stefan reads from the Appendix which is a staccato/shorthand style excerpt from Angress' diary during the war, typewritten and hard to read in the studio because it was typed on thin paper and the ink from the other side bleeds through (remember those days? Onion skin paper on Par Avion letters? And carbon paper?)

Here are some quotes about the book:

Editorial Reviews

“This autobiography deserves to be placed next to Victor Klemperer’s I Will Bear Witness as a vivid account of the Nazi years…Readers will find in these pages the unforgettable depiction of a turbulent life.” Allan Mitchell, author of Nazi Paris

“This is an extraordinary memoir, self-ironic and humane, dealing with one of the darkest chapters of twentieth century history.” Konrad H. Jarausch, Lurcy Professor of European Civilization, Department of History, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

“A gem…A gripping, suspenseful story…Sober, frank, and humane.” —Journal of Central European History

We are producing this for our generous partners at Blackstone Publishing, and you can pre-order a copy by clicking here

It's a beautifully written WWII  biography and a very moving and uplifting account of the time. Both Claire Bloom and Gabrielle share the directing credit on this project.
