Hi! We’re Kit Yan and Melissa Li, the co-creators of Interstate, a new musical that debuted in a sold-out, extended run at the New York Musical Festival (NYMF) in July 2018. We’ve been a duo since 2008, when we toured the country as the band Good Asian Drivers— Kit is a spoken word artist and Melissa is a singer-songwriter. By joining our Drip, you’re cementing your place as an active patron of the arts and, in the case of our work, social justice and LGBTQ awareness!
In 2013, we began to develop Interstate, which tells the story of a queer Asian American band on their first cross-country tour and how they inspire a South Asian trans teen in Kentucky. For this project, we were nominated for 7 NYMF Awards for Excellence and won 5 awards, including Outstanding Lyrics and a Special Citation for Representation & Inclusion. Now that our NYMF run is over, we’re not only working on continuing to develop Interstate, we’re also developing new work and we want to share our creative journey with you.
Your monthly support will help us: 1) Develop Interstate and find our next home for a full production! 2) Continue to create new musical theater that helps put women, POC, LGBTQ, and underrepresented communities onstage and backstage.
We got this great review for Interstate from BroadwayWorld that captures what we're making— we’re aiming to make all of our work as inclusive and impactful as this: "This show is for everyone who may not fit into the 'neat little boxes' of sexuality or gender. This show is for everyone who may not be 100% what is considered 'normal.' This show is for everyone who has ever looked for a sense of belonging. This show is for everyone."
Thank you for your support!
